RE: Westinghouse/CBS, Howard Stern, racist radio and the UNCF
Dear Mr. Gray:
In researching Security and Exchange Commission documents, it was with
much interest that I discovered that you are a Director of CBS, a division
of Westinghouse Electric Company.
This letter is to inform you of, what can only be termed, the systematic
and aggressively disseminated racism directed against African-Americans
by Westinghouse/CBS via The Howard Stern Show.
As a matter of introduction, I am responsible for more than $1.7 million
in federal indecency fines against Mr. Stern's broadcasters. I am equally
proud to state that I also assisted the African-American Business Association
in a multi-million dollar settlement with Mr. Stern's broadcasters as a
result of his racist broadcasts.
The entire matter of Westinghouse and Mr. Stern's indecency and racism

The site details Mr. Stern's broadcast of the hate messages delivered by
the Klu Klux Klan and his 'comedic' presentations of such things as "Nigger
Hating Hats", "Guess My Color" as well as, his racist remarks
about many African-Americans, including Rodney King, 'Magic' Johnson and
CBS's own, Bill Cosby.
I have enclosed a bit of Mr. Stern's "satire" relative to African-Americans
so that you may have a better idea of the type of material we're discussing.
As you will read, this material crosses the line of 'comedy' and lands
squarely in the category of racism. Racism delivered to 18,000,000 Americans
a day by Westinghouse/CBS.
With this in mind, it would appear that your being a member of the Board
of Directors of CBS and the President and Chief Executive Officer of the
United Negro College Fund are diametrically opposed. I can not imagine
that you are unaware of the nature of Mr. Stern broadcasts or the fact that
his program is owned, produced and distributed by Westinghouse/CBS.
When considering Mr. Stern's primary demographics of Caucasian men 18 to
35 years old, combined with the already racially volatile cities in which
Mr. Stern broadcasts (Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C.),
I believe you will agree that this material has both the possibility, and
the probability, of fueling that volatility.
I believe you will also agree that the continuance of Mr. Stern's racist
broadcasts by Westinghouse can not possible serve the nation to any positive
degree.
I have tried to bring Mr. Stern's indecency and racism to Westinghouse
CEO, Michael Jordan, only to have it categorized as Westinghouse's vision
of the First Amendment. Actually, Mr. Jordan would not address the issue
personally and chose to have the Chief Counsel for Westinghouse respond.
This letter is addressed to you in an effort to again bring this matter
to a voice of reason within the corporate structure of Westinghouse.
Since the inception of the United Negro College Fund we have heard that,
"A mind is a terrible thing to waste." Millions of Americans
gave agreed with this statement and have contributed millions of dollars
to the UNCF.
If, as the UNCF would have America believe, "A mind is a terrible
thing to waste.", and I believe that it is, then I suggest that the
minds of Mr. Stern's primarilly Caucasian audience are being wasted by Westinghouse/CBS
with racism and intolerance. And these minds, Mr. Gray, are also a terrible
thing to waste.
The duopoly of your corporate interests place you in a unique position.
A position where you can truly make a difference by 'practicing what you
preach'.
I encourage you to address this issue with Mr. Jordan and should he not
be convinced that Westinghouse must discontinue the racist broadcasts of
Howard Stern, there would be no alternative than for you to resign from
either CBS or the UNCF because you can not have it both ways.
Simply stated, it would be rather awkward, and I would think a bit more
than hypocritical, for the CEO of the United Negro College Fund to continue
to sit on the Board of CBS, an affiliate of Westinghouse which broadcasts,
produces and distributes Howard Stern's racism and indecency, don't you
agree?

P.S. I just finished this letter and, just out of curiosity, I visited
the Interner site belonging to the UNCF. Imagine my horror in discovering
that Mr. Michael H. Jordan is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of
UNCF.

"What's My Color . . . The Game"
Two caucasian men and one African-American man come into Stern's radio studio.
Howard Stern, Robin Quivers and two members of Stern's
production staff are blindfolded and ask questions
to figure out which one is black.
A few of the questions asked by Stern and his crew:
"What kind of cigarettes do you smoke?"
"Can you swim?"
"When do welfare checks come?"
Howard Stern and the KKK
As a regular 'satirical' feature on his radio program,
Howard Stern calls the KKK 'hotline' and records their taped message
for rebroadcast to his 18 million listeners, nationwide.
Here are a few comments from the many KKK messages
broadcast by Howard Stern.
"How much money will our Nigger lover Bill Clinton raise our taxes
to try to
save these filthy aids carrying jungle savage Niggers . . .
Some Niggers around the country say they will boycott Georgia if the flag
still flies,
but who cares where a Nigger boycotts,
who cares where they spend their food stamps and their welfare checks .
. .
Most businesses would rather Niggers stay away anyhow . . .
Niggers cause flies to swarm anywhere they show up . . .
Now our Nigger loving President Bill Clinton
has the job of finding a new Supreme Court justice
and we all know he'll probably pick another Nigger,
this time he'll probably pick a female Nigger . . .
He might as well put a monkey on the high court because
they're about the same qualifications . . .
Niggers have destroyed most of our public schools already . . .
Niggers carry their dope to schools . . . Niggers carry guns to schools

Some scientists admit now that Niggers are still in the ape stage . . .

"Nigger Hating Hats"
A news report about a western music performer
led to Mr. Stern's 'satirical' discussion of western hats
and the people that wear them.
Stern's feeling is that anyone who wears a western hat,
as Stern says, "hates niggers".
Eventually, "Nigger Hating Hats" became a "Howard Stern Song
Parody".
It is played repeatedly on Stern's program and available on CD!
"Where's my big Nigger hating hat?"
"I never met a Nigger I didn't hate"
"Stomp on their Nigger faces"
"We got our Nigger hatin' hats on"
"How many people here hate Niggers"
"I happen to have here, a big Nigger hating hat"
