The Committee for Peasant Unity became active in the late 1970's protesting poor wages and hazardous labor conditions on the fincas (plantations) of both the highlands and the Pacific Coast.
In 1980, they led a one-month strike of some 100,000 peasants which paralyzed that year's harvest of coffee, cotton and sugar. Though they demanded a raise from 1.2 Quetzales per day to 6, the minimum needed for basic subsistence, they only received 3.2. This victory, however, was undercut by means devised for landowners to maintain below minimum wages and by subsequent currency de-valuations over the years.
