Guerrilla Army of the Poor (EGP)

The Guerrilla Army of the Poor was active in North-Western Guatemala, primarily in the area known as the Ixcán, located along the Mexico/Guatemala border. They gained peasant support in the late 1970's by killing exploitative large land holders, such as Luis Aranas, the "Tiger of the Ixcán". These tactics, in turn, resulted in rapid and brutal military reactions which transformed this area into one of the bloodiest in the country.
