Juan José Arévalo

The Arévalo Presidency marked a strong break from the liberal dictators of the previous era. In addition to implementing progressive reforms, he established the Indigenous Institute, a government agency which worked to study and preserve indigenous language and culture. This served to empower previously marginalized Mayan peasants and resulted in an increased indigenous presence in politics.
