Tecún Umán
Tecún Umán, grandson of King Quicab the Great, led the Quiché army in its resistance against Pedro de Alvarado's expedition. According to Quiché accounts of the battle, Tecún Umán struck down Alvarado's horse with one stroke. Unharmed, Alvarado then impaled Tecún Umán with a steel lance, wounding him mortally. The site was named Quetzaltenango, in honor of the valiant Umán and the beautiful quetzal feathers he wore into battle.
