My other Picks for GRE Prep (Other books and software for comprehensive GRE prep) | |
.GRE-GMAT Math Review (6th Edition)
......(Published by Peterson's) ORDER This Book NOW ........ (directly from Amazon.com)Specs: $23.00 cover price ($US); 450 pagesBasis for my recommendation: This book provides the most complete GRE math prep of any book: lesson materials, skill-building exercises, GRE-style questions (but see Critique below). Because the book is now in its 6th Edition you'll find very few (if any) errors. Critique: The book contains few GRE-style Quantitative Comparison questions. If you want lots of practice with this question format, you're better off buying one of the comprehensive books I've recommended above. (In short: Buy this book for the pedagogy, not for taking practice tests.) Description/Features: - Skill-building exercises for every question type
- Lesson materials for every Quantitative area covered on the GRE
- NOTE: Portions of the book contain GMAT-only material.

.Computer-Adaptive GRE PowerPrep Software
......(Published by Educational Testing Service) ORDER this Product NOW ........ (used copies are available at Amazon.com)Suggested retail price ($US): $40.00Number of Practice Tests: 2 (see Features below) Basis for my recommendation: If you want to simulate the GRE testing experience without going to an official testing center, this software affords you a great way to do it. You'll know you're dealing with the real CBT computer interface and with the genuine computer algorithm — which moves you up and down the ladder of difficulty depending on your responses to earlier questions (but see Critique below). Critique: - The average difficulty level of the questions is skewed toward the easy end, and score reports distort performance levels upward in comparison to the actual GRE
- No teaching materials (other than the test taking tips, which are also included in the official (and free) GRE Bulletin
- Most of the test questions and practice questions also appear in GRE Big Book (keep this in mind if you're thinking of buying either of these two books as well)
- Windows version only (no Mac version)
Description/Features: - 2 full-length GRE practice exams, to simulate the real test-taking experience
- Approximately 400 additional practice questions with explanations (grouped by question type)
- Scaled score reports for the two tests and percentile rankings (comparing your scores to those of other GRE test takers)
- Test-taking strategies and the same computer tutorial you'll encounter at the testing center before you begin the real test
- NOTE: ETS has "retired" all the multiple-choice questions included in this software program, so you won't see any of them when you take the real GRE.

. GRE: Practicing to Take the General Test (10th Edition)
......(Published by Educational Testing Service) ORDER This Book NOW ........ (directly from Amazon.com)Specs: $21.00 cover price ($US); 443 pagesNumber of Practice Tests: 7 (see Features below) Basis for my recommendation: With this book you know you're working with real previously-administered GRE tests (but you won't find these identical questions on the real GRE anymore); a low-priced alternative to ETS' GRE Big Book (see above). Description/Critique: - Although each test includes an answer key, only the first of the seven tests includes explanations for the questions.
- The structure of the tests in the book follows the old paper-based exam format. This isn't a big drawback; you just need to keep this in mind.
- The 40-page math review does not incorporate GRE-style questions (which would help reinforce math concepts); so if you're weak in math, don't rely on this book.
- The book contains no teaching materials other than a math review and the same basic test-taking tips that you'll find in the official (and free) GRE Bulletin.
- In short, buy this book for building confidence with the practice questions, not for the pedagogy.
