Here you'll find out where and when the GRE is available; you'll also learn about GRE registration and about canceling your scores and repeating the test.

Where and When is the GRE Offered?

The computer-based GRE is administered at approximately 600 different computer-based testing centers throughout North America and at selected sites outside North America. Testing centers are located at various, colleges, universities, secondary schools, ETS field offices, and Prometric Testing Centers.

The computer-based GRE is offered on a continual basis. Testing hours and days may vary among test centers. ETS' goal is for all test centers to be open 10 hours a day, six days a week, all year long. Although you might be able to take the test within as little as two days after scheduling an appointment, busier testing centers may experience backlogs up to several weeks.

GRE Registration Methods and Procedures

Computer-based GRE: Registration for the computer-based GRE is by appointment at one of the computer-based testing centers. You can register for the computer-based GRE by either of two methods (VISA, MasterCard, or American Express required):

  • online registration: www.gre.org
  • telephone registration (1-800-GRE-CALL)
Paper-Based General GRE and Subject Exams: You can register for the paper-based General and/or Subject Tests by either of two methods:

  • online registration (VISA, MasterCard, or American Express required): www.gre.org
  • mail-in registration (with the form included in the official GRE Bulletin)

Repeating the GRE

You may repeat the GRE as often as you want; however, to take the exam a second time, you must wait until the next month following your initial exam. For example, if you take the GRE initially any time in November, you can repeat the test any time in December. A similar waiting period is imposed after all retakes as well.

Canceling Your GRE Scores

You may cancel your GRE scores at any time during the test or immediately after completing the test. Also, if you take too long a break between exam sections, the exam session will automatically terminate (after a warning) and your responses and scores (if any) will be canceled. Once you request an unofficial score report (immediately after the test), you cannot cancel your scores.

Assuming you haven't requested an unofficial score report, you may also cancel your scores at any time within one week after the test. Score reports sent to the schools note cancellations (although the reports do not note the scores themselves). A record of score cancellation will not hurt your chances of admission.

For detailed information about GRE registration procedures, consult ETS' official GRE Web site (www.gre.org), or refer to the printed GRE Information Bulletin, published annually by ETS. • credentials and requirements for admission to the GRE
  • test center procedures and regulations
  • scoring and score reporting
