Shinkokyu

(Relaxed Breathing)

Shinkokyu is basically concerned with replenishing the supply of oxygen during periods of exertion, so that a normal rate of breathing may be restored and the body relaxed. The most common method of practicing “Shinkokyu”, is by joining the hands loosely at the waist and slowly raising them over the head, while inhaling deeply through the nose. The movement of the arms upward, aids in opening the lungs. The inhalation should be steady and full, and should be a short pause, while the lungs are filled, followed by unclasping the hands and lowering the arms slowly in a circular motion. The air should be exhaled through the mouth in synchronization with the movement of the arms. Next clasp the hands in front of you at the waist again and inhale through the nose slowly as you unclasp the hands and pull the arms up and back at chest level. Pause a moment, then exhale through the mouth as you lower the arms and bring the hands to the starting position at your waist. Repeat this process at an appropriate rate until you have caught your breath.
