The practice uniform may be known by various names in Japanese. “Keikogi”, “Renshugi” (training uniform), “Budogi” (martial way uniform), “Dogi” (way uniform), “Karategi” (empty hand uniform), and most commonly, “Gi”. The practice uniform is made up of the jacket (uwagi), trousers (zubon), and belt (obi). Often a head band (hachimaki), is also worn. The head band prevents hair and perspiration from getting in the eyes and it is symbolic of preparing to work hard, just as rolling up the sleeves is in western culture. When the head band is worn, it should generally be the same color as the belt. The practice uniform should be kept clean at all times, and should be properly folded when not in use. There should be no marking, patches, emblems, etc., other than those required.
