Purposes:

The purposes of the Santa Barbara Music Club are to increase the love and knowledge of music in all its phases, and to stimulate interest in music in our community. It aids and encourages music education by the disbursement of scholarships, and it promotes American music and artists.

The Santa Barbara Music Club was established in 1969, and is one of over five thousand groups associated with the half-million member National Federation of Music Clubs. It is a recognized non-profit organization. Here's what we do.  Click on one to find out:

ACTIVITIES

Morning Programs:

Music Club regular meetings are generally held on the Second Wednesday of each month from October until June, at 10:30 AM, usually in the Faulkner Gallery of the Downtown Public Library. A short business meeting is followed by the Morning Program presented by Performing Members. The public is invited to the performance and admission is free.

National Music Week Celebration

Each year in May the Music Club joins with hundreds of other Clubs all over the US to sponsors concerts and other events designed to promote music. Return to Top

Matinees and Twilight Concerts

Twilight events are generally held on a Third Wednesday at 5:00 PM in the Faulkner Gallery of the Downtown Public Library.  Lasting an hour, the concerts are given by performing members and guest artists.  Matinee concerts are given at 3:00 PM on Saturdays in the Faulkner Gallery, generally from October through June.  The public is invited.  Admission is free.  Check the News Press "Scene" for current schedules. Workshops:

Performing members play informally for each other in someone’s home. Workshops meet once each month.

Newsletter:

This contains news about musical events, articles, items of personal interest to members, and the programs for the Morning Program and the Noon Musicale. It is mailed to members each month.

Yearbook:

An annual directory of members is published, together with the works to be played at the Morning Programs that have been scheduled for the year. Each member receives a copy.

Scholarships:

The Music Club raises funds, holds auditions, and awards scholarships to young students residing in Santa Barbara County, or students of teachers who reside here. The scholarship committee supervises the auditions and scholarship awards. Return to top

Special Concerts:

Performing Members, or others who are invited, give special concerts using the Music Club’s piano in the Faulkner Gallery facility.

Retirement Home Programs:

Performing members and others form ensembles which tour retirement homes in Santa Barbara County, playing short programs for residents who are handicapped and unable to go out to a concert. Return to top

MEMBERSHIP

Types of Members:

The Music Club has two kinds of members: Performing and Associate. Both are eligible to vote. Individual and family memberships are available. Dues are $25 per year for a single membership and $30 for a family membership.

Joining the Club:

Those applying to be Performing members are asked to audition, although audition committee members sometimes waive this requirement when they are already familiar with the candidate’s skills because of recent concert performances. Associate membership applicants may simply apply for membership by mail. Return to top

GOVERNANCE

Board and Committees:

The Music Club is governed by its Board of Directors. Its activities are carried out by its committees. These include membership, audition, scholarship, hospitality, publicity, nominating, telephone, newsletter, program, musicale, service program, performing workshop, national music week, fund rising, and the library piano committee.

Board Composition:

The board of directors consists of the elected officers and the directors of the scholarship committee, usually supplemented by the appointed chairs of the various committees. It meets regularly. Return to top
