John Sonquist's LOUUC Choir Page

Dear Choir Members:

NEW -- NEW -- NEW -- REHEARSAL SUGGESTIONS

These suggestions are intended to help you learn the mechanics of the music. That's the rhythms, the notes, and the intervals between them. It's intended to help with the words, too, but that's really secondary. The details of tempo, ritards, and crescendos, are only approximations. We'll learn these in the regular rehearsal.

Here are some helpful hints:

1. Sing only a syllable, like "la" or "me" very softly at first when you start rehearsing. Focus on listening, not on your voice, your tone quality, or on volume. Later, when you start to get familiar with the notes and the rhythms, then add the words. At that point, you can sing at normal volume.

2. Try to find a time to rehearse when you are alone. Focus your attention on reading your part, and you will learn notes, intervals, and rhythms easily.

3. If you can do it then get together for subsequent section rehearsals with some other members of your choir section. Have a little rehearsal together.

This way, you can devote your attention to reading your part. Spend some time doing this, and you'll become a better note reader. That will permit you to focus on interpretive details during our rehearsals.

It's suggested that you assemble this score with pages 1 and 2 back to back, 3 and 4 back to back, etc., tape the top, center, and bottom of the right hand side of pages 1 and 2, etc., and then 3-hole punch these doubled pages and put them in a notebook. (That's how I handle something this big).
