What is HEGF?

High Energy Gas Fracturing (HEGF) is the most common generic name used by the oil and gas industry for the technology of stimulating wells with the use of propellant gas generators. Other generic names which have been used for this technology are Tailored Gas Pulse Loading, Controlled Pulse Pressurization, and Controlled Pulse Fracturing.

HEGF treatments use a special solid propellant which is conveyed to the target zone. Upon ignition, the propellant converts into combustion products. The resulting hot gas, contained by a liquid column in the wellbore, expands to generate multiple fractures in every perforated direction in the well.

The technology of High Energy Gas Fracturing was originated and developed by Mr. Mohaupt, founder and President of Servo-Dynamics, Inc.

By the mid 1950s, jet perforating had reached its natural limits of penetration depth. This natural limitation, however, did not remove the industry's need for improved zone penetration. In 1956, Mr. Mohaupt introduced a new system in which existing perforations were subjected to a gas pulse of appropriate magnitude and duration resulting in an individual fracture pattern emanating from each perforation. Mohaupt's original HEGF concept was intended from its inception to do what perforating alone could not do; economically extend penetration into a productive formation from a few inches to a depth of several yards.

Since that time, continual improvements and refinements in the system have been introduced exclusively by Mr. Mohaupt and Servo-Dynamics, Inc., including proprietary propellant compositions and ignition systems, carriers, and modular assembly, to name a few, resulting in the highly effective DGPL®/STRESSFRAC® services of today.
