Yea, yea, I know this news letter is way overdue. Please don’t hold it against me, cause when you hear this album you’re gonna freak. Back in August I was planning to do just a 4 song demo. Gotta great deal at an in-home studio. However, it meant that the recording would be on DAT (digital audio tape). Everyone has DAT machines cause they’re cheap and any numb-skull can use them. Once I was done, I couldn’t stand my voice on digital tape. I’m an analog chic, big fat 2 inch tape. The kind of tape used in the old days to make LP’s. Besides tape machines ought to be big and cumbersome and difficult to use if only to keep out the riff-raff. That's why I decided to start over, do it right, do it analog and do a whole CD. None of this demo stuff. So I’m spendin’ boo-coo bucks (obviously that’s why it’s taking longer too) and no drum machines, drum loops, or anything else that makes the music sound automated. Needless to say it’s sounding incredible. Finally, I’ve got an engineer who’s also a great producer, he has some amazing equipment and better yet, knows how to use it. (no double-entendre intended) Just last night I laid down a lead vocal track and man did I have a blast. My voice is virtually naked and you hear every inflection. I was in heaven. I’ve been in heaven with the whole experience this time around. I couldn’t ask for a better co-writer than Howard Anderson. There will be a lot of thick, warm acoustic guitar work on this C.D. just because Howie is so brilliant at it. He is also brilliant at turning into a lunatic when it comes time to do the electric guitar tracks. You all will think I’ve regressed and became this hard-rockin’ chic on a few songs. It’s a great balance though, I need a few tunes with some gut-level, agro energy. Also, Dave Keif is one hell of a musician, a tremendous bass player who can play an outrageous bass line on one tune and then something simple and appropriate on another. Of course I couldn’t do any of this without Larry Perpoli on drums. He just played his heart out and gave the tunes a pocket I could latch on to. Larry is the funky element I can’t do without. I know what you’re thinking, this is all great but hey when is this thing going to be finished? I’m shooting for June and when it’s done we’re gonna have a knock-down, drag-out party hopefully at Luna Park or a showcase club, or maybe at the Hungry Hunter. Speaking of the Hungry Hunter, what a great place to play. I’m a nervous wreck before every gig. It means something to me. There is a lot on the line. I have to be able to move you with just the music and a killer performance. That’s it. No gimics. My birthday is coming up and that is no gimic. Ask my mom, it’s her birthday too. We’ll celebrate it on the April 24th gig at the Hungry Hunter. Just bring yourself and maybe a playmate! Party hats optional. Coming up in May, we are performing at the Westlake Promenade. Same band as at the Hungry Hunter with the special addition of Howard Anderson, my co-writer, on guitar. We will be doing all the tunes off the upcoming album. So come on down and hear a sneak pre-view. I’m truly blessed with great friends and family, loyal fans, and incredible musicians. You keep me from remaining static and getting too comfortable. You drive me insane. You make me live. Thanks, Joy Burnworth
