When in Shanghai, the Augusta was moored along the Bund in the Whangpoo River with the other foreign warships protecting the international settlement. The Bund was the heart of the busy commercial international district of Shanghai. There were American, Russian, French, British, German, Italian, Dutch, and Japanese neighborhoods.

Also stationed in Shanghai was the famous Fourth Marine Regiment, the China Marines, to which my father was attached.
