Professional Achievements
Web Site Development
- Assisted company in obtaining ISO 9001:2000 certification by building an Intranet web site that is used as a tool to control and direct access to documentation related to the company's products and business processes.
- Updated and enhanced the site for the Outstanding Professionals Employment Network to improve the site's ranking with the search engines. Also created a repository for documents and resources intended for use only by the membership and not accessible to the general public.
- Developed a personal Internet web site as a test bed for web delivery of multimedia information. The site has been live on the web for six years and averages 1 million hits per year.
- Developed the web site for the California Weather Association to increase their membership and provide a vehicle for communications with the members.
- Saved the cost of distributing paper documents by proposing and developing a web site for a Technical Publications Department in Nortel Networks for distributing draft and released documentation.
Systems Design and Administration
- Improved productivity 230% by proposing, implementing, and continually updating a departmental publishing system based on networked PCs and workstations.
Information Architecture
- Solved production problems encountered with growing product line by modularizing the product's user documentation set.
- Reduced training costs and time by developing Computer Based Training for a product's users.
- Reduced production time from three days to two hours by designing and implementing a company's first documentation successfully delivered in HTML, using no previously available model or structure.
- Saved over ten person/days labor cost per documentation release, by designing and implementing a system that allows divergent development schedules between software development and technical writing of a product's online help system.
- Integrated multiple engineering documents into an easy to navigate web site contained within a CD ROM. This created a new product sold to customers as a Software Developers Kit.
- Created a JavaHelp online help system for a network management software package using the Java Developers Kit, the JavaHelp package, and hand coded HTML and XML files. This avoided the cost of an authoring tool and allowed the help topics to be presented on a regular web site and re-purposed for use in other documentation.
- Designed and implemented the structure of a multi-faceted documentation suite (single source documentation). This structure enabled writers to create manuals using FrameMaker and distribute the information as a single web site, as files that could be accessed from CD ROM, as printable manuals, and as an integral part of the product's online help system.
- Designed and implemented the operating instructions and reference material for a VoIP (voice over IP) product as a Windows Help system; structured to allow the system to be used simultaneously as the user's operating instructions and as the product's online help.
