Forwarding mail from another provider
If you have more than one internet account and would like to have
your electronic mail re-directed automatically to your WestNet
mailbox, here's how to do so. You'll need the ability to access
the unix shell on the "forward from" account.
- Gain access to the unix shell prompt on the account you'll be transferring from.
This can be accomplished by logging in to the shell of the "from" account
directly or opening a telnet connection from Westnet and logging in to the
"from" account over the internet. You should see a prompt something like:
machine%
- Create a file in your home directory on the "from" account by typing:
pico .forward
This will bring up a mini-editor that looks a lot like the pine mail program.
- Place your forwarding address on a line by itself in the file. Type:
username@west.net
substituting your actual username on WestNet for username.
- Save the file. Hold down the CTRL key, and
type X. When asked if you want to save the modified
buffer, type Y. Hit ENTER
when asked for a filename, keeping the default .forward .
- Exit the "from" account. Type
exit
to close the connection.
- Test it. Send mail to your "from" account and verify that it appears in
your WestNet mailbox.
- If you ever need to turn the mail forwarding off, log in to the unix prompt
on the "from" account as in step one above, and at the unix prompt type:
rm .forward
Then close the connection.
