Teacher's Question of the Week

Q: WShakespearehat is the scope of my role as a professor in providing accommodations to students with disabilities who are enrolled in my class? Is there a difference between what is required by law and what is negotiable?

A: You are teaching Shakespeare, and you notice that a student is enthusiastic about the plays you read aloud in class, but her written work is quite different in quality from her oral answers. In your office hour appointment with her, you inquire if she has ever gotten any support academically. She identifies herself as a student with a learning disability.

What do you do? What are your responsibilities? The Center for Research on Learning of the University of Kansas offers an informative online series of webpages for professors in response to inquiries about disability, accommodations, and their role in the educational accommodations process.
