COURSE PURPOSE
This course is designed for students with disabilities whose educational limitations affect acquisition, processing and expression of language. Rather than take the place of an English class, it provides strategies by which students may optimize their performance in college classes requiring reading and writing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To learn and apply reading and writing strategies to your credit class assignments so you do your best in college and in your future career.
2. To improve your skills in dealing with the written language.

Communication:
SLO 1: Apply, analyze and evaluate strategies for completing reading assignments.
MEASURE: Pre and post questionnaires; strategy self-evaluations; RAP for Paraphrasing Directed Learning Activity (DLA); SQ5R DLA

SLO 2: Apply, analyze and evaluate strategies for completing writing assignments.

SLO 3: Describe learning profile and communicate requests for accommodations.

Personal, Academic and Career Development (Self-Regulation):

Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Creative Thinking:
SLO 5: Demonstrate conceptual thinking while reading and/or writing essays.
MEASURE: Pre and post questionnaires; Concept Diagram, Elements of Reasoning worksheet, or Essay Checklist with essay requiring conceptual and logical analysis and synthesis.

CLASS STRUCTURE and EXPECTATIONS
Requirements:
1. Buy DSPS 77: Writing & Reading Strategies Packet. Bring to class Thursday, 8/26, and every day of class.
2. Syllabi: Bring in copies of your syllabi from SBCC courses requiring reading and writing by Tu., 8/31. The syllabi help you stay organized so you get the most out of class time and improve grades. Explain assignments to tutors.
3. Bring in assignments: Bring your reading and writing assignments from SBCC courses into class each day, and complete them using the appropriate strategy. Choose the best strategy to use from the DSPS 77 packet's "Table of Contents." New students need to master four strategies, but will practice as many strategies as possible. Returning students will focus on mastering higher level strategies and integrate those they’ve mastered.
4. Appointment: It is required to meet individually with Ms. Lewin to discuss your learning profile (LP) and accommodations. You’ll work on your written LP worksheet. Make the appointment by 9/02 by speaking with the DSPS staff at the front desk in SS160 or Ms. Lewin after class.
5. Evaluations: Two evaluations are due throughout the semester. Choose two, each from a different area: Reading, Writing, Thinking, or Study Skills. The first one is due Th., 10/07, and the second one is due Tu., 11/02.
6. Learning Profile Assignment: Turn in your Learning Profile assignment with the teacher’s signature by Tu., 10/19.
7. Reading Strategies: Complete DLAs for RAP for Paraphrasing (due 9/14) and SQ5R (due 9/28).
8. Essay Checklist or Vocabulary Sheet: Your Essay Checklist plus a copy of the essay is due Th., 11/18. Option 2 is to complete an Eye for Essential Vocabulary Sheet.
9. Concept Diagram or Elements of Reasoning: Fill out the Concept Diagram or Elements of Reasoning and turn it in by Tu., 11/23.
10. Progress Checklist: Update your Progress Checklist (handout) as you complete assignments. It will be turned in the last day of class, 12/02, with your DSPS assignments. It is very important to be responsible for your progress in this class, as well as in all of your classes. It really works if you create your own checklists to support your time management for assignments for all of you’re your classes.

Did your time melt away last term? Try a new approach to organizing your time this semester. Use pages 94 – 100 in the DSPS 77 Packet. See Ms. Lewin for an appointment to develop a time management program. It will really set you up for great work habits at your future career!
