PURPOSE
This course is designed for students with disabilities whose educational limitations
affect acquisition, processing and expression of language. Rather than take
the place of an English class, it provides strategies by which students may
optimize their performance in college classes requiring reading and writing.
Agatha Christie,
Author with Dyslexia
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To learn and apply reading and writing strategies to your credit class assignments
so you do your best in college and in your future career.
2. To improve your skills in dealing with the written language.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Syllabi: Bring in copies of your syllabi from SBCC courses requiring
reading and writing by Tu., Feb. 5. The syllabi help you stay organized so you
get the most out of class time and improve grades. Explain assignments to tutors.
2. Bring in assignments: Beginning Th., Feb 14, bring your reading
and writing assignments from SBCC courses into class each day, and complete
them using the appropriate strategy. Choose the best strategy to use from the
DSPS 77 packet's "Table of Contents." New students need to master four strategies,
but will practice as many strategies as possible. Returning students will focus
on mastering higher level strategies and integrate those they've mastered.
3. Appointment: It is required to meet individually with Ms. Lewin
to discuss your learning profile (LP) and accommodations. You'll work on your
written LP worksheet. Make the appointment by Th., Feb. 14 by speaking with
the DSPS staff at the front desk in SS160 or Ms. Lewin after class.
4. Evaluations: Two evaluations are due throughout the semester. Choose
two, each from a different area: Reading, Writing, Thinking, or Study Skills.
The first one is due Tu., Mar. 25, and the second one is due Tu., May 8.
5. Learning Profile Assignment: Turn in your Learning Profile assignment
with the teacher's signature by Th., Mar. 27.
6. Essay Checklist or Vocabulary Sheet: Your Essay Checklist plus a
copy of the essay is due Tu., April 29. Option 2 is to complete an Eye for Essential
Vocabulary Sheet.
7. Concept Diagram, Elements of Reasoning or Thesis Worksheet: Fill
out the Concept Diagram, Elements of Reasoning or Thesis Worksheet for an essay
you are developing and turn it in by Tu., May 1.
8. Progress Checklist: Update your Progress Checklist (p. 133) as you
complete assignments. It will be turned in the last day of class, May 15, with
your DSPS assignments. It is very important to be responsible for your progress
in this class, as well as in all of your classes. If you do not have a checklist
for each class, you can create your own checklists to support your time management.

Class Rules
1. Grading/Earning Credit: DSPS 77 is a credit or no credit 2 unit class. Your active participation and productivity in class form a large part of your "CR". Turning the assignments in on time is important, as is your continuity of attendance and presence of motivation, mind and will. The Progress Checklist and syllabus list your assignments.
2. Attendance: Four absences are allowed. If you miss more than four classes and do not make up the time, you need to follow through by withdrawing from the class or you will receive a no credit at semester's end. (See the college catalog for rules.)
3. Make-ups: You may make up time for no more than four absences in the DSPS Strategies Tutorial Lab (SS 272) by working on a reading or writing task from one of your college courses. You must work with the tutor and show that you are applying strategies which means planning, organizing, and editing your written work, and using active thinking skills when reading and writing.
*** Get credit for the time you make up by giving Gerry Lewin a completed DSPS Tutorial Lab form. The form is available in the lab from Lyn Paulos. DSPS Lab Hours: Mon./Wed. 9:05 am - 6:30 pm Tu./Th. 7:30 am - 6:30 pm Fri. 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
4. Documented Long-term Absences: If for some unavoidable reason, you miss a significant amount of time (i.e., death in family, severe illness or something else that can be documented by an authority other than your dog), please arrange to meet with Gerry Lewin in an office hour to decide upon an alternate assignment. Contact her at 965-0581, ext. 2343, or email her at lewin@sbcc.edu.
5. Lack of Punctuality: Tardies to class are accurately recorded and count against attendance. Students who are often late are at risk of receiving a ìNo Creditî (NC) just based upon subtracting the sum of minutes late from the total possible class hours! Consider yourself to be responsible for work and time as you would on a job. Your pay is not money but it comes in the form of educational degrees or certificates that increase your future pay, and is supportive of life long learning.
Have a great semester!!!
