Q: What can parents do to assist their children who are finishing high school and about to make the transition to college?

A: There are significant differences between the high school and college settings, including the laws that apply to students with disabilities. The Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas has prepared a brochure designed especially for prospective college students and their parents.

This link takes you to "A Parent's Guide to College". Students should read through the brochure too, paying attention to the "Comparison of Services", "Setting Demands", "Self-Advocacy" and "Further Support" sections.

If you have questions, feel free to call the DSPS office to make an appointment with a counselor or learning specialist (SBCC DSPS: 805/965-0581, ext. 2364).
