1. Reports on Models for future meetings: Volunteers are needed to research
and report on models. We may wish to incorporate in our final proposal(s) aspects
of other models.
a. Fullerton’s TAP model - Jack Ullom described Fullerton's model, and
how it compares with our system. What could work; what concerns people may have.
b. Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) and Scaffolding
Techniques: These approaches have been developed by educators to provide effective
academic (as opposed to just language) instruction to students learning English
as a Second Language. Paul McGarry 10/10/05
c. Orientation models - Nina Warner, Scott Brewer and Jodi Simpson underscored
the importance of faculty involvement in Orientation. Several examples were
offered of other college's models.
d. Exemplary Award Winners (Select Faculty Awards on SBCC webpage and then link
to the Exemplary Program Award website.)
2. Comments on the reorganized Obstacles to Student Success Form
a. Can we identify any core issues?
b. Do we need to prioritize sections 3 and 4?
c. Other side: Categories of Obstacles developed by Congleton, Ferrer, Laris
and Ullom in a summer workgroup
3. Begin Prioritizing the Solutions
Mo’s suggestion is to use a lens such as the following by which to consider
Solutions (when we are ready).
Category I: Solutions to be implemented immediately which have no or little
impact on college resources
Category II: Solutions to core problems- Solutions that have impact on more
one than one area. (Look at inter-related problems and possible solutions- one
solution may solve many problems)
Category III: Solutions that require significant resources or long term solutions
4. Round up Discussion
Next Meeting: Mon., Oct. 10, 2005, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in SS 240E
