Toad the Wet Sprocket,
Depeche Mode, Green Day,
Enya,
Better than Ezra, Bjork, Dead Can Dance, Tori Amos, etc., etc. (Do you want your
MTV?)
MOVIES
I enjoy all kinds of movies, from comedy to romance to sci-fi to
shoot-'em-ups. I don't have a whole lotta time for going out to
movies, so I usually rent videos. Here are some quick thoughts on what I've recently seen:
- "Twister" - Wow! What a rush! This was great - it really kept us on the edges of our seats. See it - you'll be swept away ; )!
- "GoldenEye" - Except for a VERY unbelievable stunt at the beginning, this was a pretty good Bond flick. Pierce Brosnan makes a decent Bond, although they didn't give him enough witty dialog.
- "How to Make an American Quilt" - Winona tries to decide what to do with her life, with a gaggle of older ladies (and their mistakes) as her guides. Good if you like sentimental stuff.
- "Powder" - I liked this one, even though I think they could have made it a lot better. It's sort of billed as a sci-fi film but it's really not.
- "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" - this was a fun,
cute movie. The whole audience laughed quite a bit. Unfortunately
I thought the stereotypes of 'pretty = dumb' and 'smart = ugly'
were over-exaggerated.
- "To Die For" - Nicole Kidman is downright scary!
The movie in general is pretty twisted. Joaquin Phoenix (River's
little brother) does a great job of being totally vacant (hopefully
not typecasting...).
- "Tremors 2" - If you liked the first one, this one
is pretty similar (but not as good - the usual sequel drawback).
- "Cutthroat Island" - This was a fun movie but I
don't think it lived up to its potential. IMHO Geena Davis was
particularly bad - it seemed like she was just reading off her
lines.
- "Mall Rats" - Don't expect much and you'll be happy!
Good soundtrack.
- "Empire Records" - "
- "Clueless" - I was forced to see this movie against
my will, but it turned out to be pretty funny! Great soundtrack.
- "Tank Girl" - this is another video I never would
have chosen - but we all had a blast watching it! Great soundtrack.
- "Assassins" - This turned out to be pretty entertaining.
Antonio Banderas had quite a few amusing one-liners.
- "Lord of Illusions" - Again, they could've done
a lot more with this movie. It seemed pretty hokey.
BOOKS
The genre I prefer is FANTASY. My favorite anthology is Sword
and Sorceress edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The stories are
mostly by and about women. I am currently reading volume 10 and
#11 is waiting on my shelf (along with a lot of other books!).
I don't have a great deal of time for reading these days, so short
stories are just my speed right now.
I also try to keep up with novels by Mercedes Lackey,
Jennifer Roberson and Katherine Kurtz, among others.
I enjoy writing as well and have written a few short stories.
If I ever finish revising my favorite one, I hope to submit it
to Marion Zimmer Bradley (for either the anthology or her Fantasy
Magazine).
I prefer stories with strong female characters. If you have any
recommendations please drop me a note!
