Juveniles of many fish species often undergo extreme color changes before they reach adulthood. Good examples are these two juveniles - a yellowtail damselfish (above) and a threespot damselfish (below). When mature, the yellowtail will be almost black with dull blue specs along its top and a yellow tail. The threespot will be dusky gray with 1 spot near its eye, 1 on the base of its front (pectoral) fin, and 1 at the base of its tail. |
