Written Assignments
1. Provide alternatives to written assignments such as oral or tape recorded presentations or demonstrations.
2. See beyond the spelling and punctuation errors and acknowledge appropriate vocabulary and ideas.
3. Allow students help with proofing mechanical errors in writing. (If students hear a dramatic reading of their own work, they will often catch their own errors.)
4. Allow students to get lecture notes from another student in class.
5. Encourage the student to use a word processor with adaptive programs, such as a spellchecker and a screen reader aiding editing written work, and Inspiration, a brainstorming tool.
6. Allow double time for students with verified learning disabilities for all in class writing, or allow student to complete the task in the DSPS proctored test environment, following your instructions.
7. Allow the use of calligraphy, colored pens, colored paper, tracing and other multi-sensory materials.
8. Allow use of tape recorder for brainstorming ideas before writing.
9. Allow student to read writing onto tape to help with editing.
10. Allow student to quietly read aloud written work to help with proofing.
11. Allow the use of portable spellcheckers.
12. Encourage the use of writing utilities on the computer.
