Feuerstein's

Cognitive Map

The cognitive map was developed as part of Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment Program. The purpose is to aid in the categorization and definition of the components of mental acts. Considering the seven parameters of the cognitive map helps to tailor a lesson plan to the specific needs of the group. It also provides a framework for analyzing possible causes of error. The seven parameters assist in identifying the covert processes required in lessons. The emphasis is on process rather than product.

1. content (subject matter)

2. kinds of operations involved (eg. classification, seriation, syllogistic, analogical, or inferential reasoning)

3. modality or language (eg. figural, graphic, numerical, symbolic, verbal, sign language, motoric or gestural)

4. phase of the mental act (input, elaboration, output)

5. level of complexity (number & degree of novelty of units)

6. level of abstraction (distance between mental act & object or event on which it operates, ranging from sensorially perceived objects to hypothetical propositions)

7. level of efficiency (rapidity/precision)
